A lifelong obsessive. A devoted student of the tradition. Available for pubs, weddings, festivals, and private events — solo or with a group.
Max Dunne grew up in Evergreen Park, Illinois, and got his first guitar at ten years old — a hand-me-down that didn't stand a chance. Within months he had learned every Nirvana song he could find. Then every Metallica song. It wasn't ambition so much as compulsion: when Max finds something worth knowing, he goes all the way in.
That same quality followed him into college, where he encountered traditional Irish music for the first time and fell completely. He dove into DADGAD-tuned guitar and the deep world of Irish trad, and it changed the way he heard music altogether.
The turn came in his early twenties, when Max accompanied an uilleann piper at a gig for the first time. The sound stopped him cold. Full, sweet, unlike anything else — the uilleann pipes are among the rarest and most demanding instruments in the Irish tradition, and Max wanted in. He did exactly what he now tells his own students to do: bought a $15 tin whistle, started learning the tunes, and put his name on a waiting list for a set of pipes.
The rest was patience and obsession in equal measure. Today Max performs and teaches across Chicagoland, plays uilleann pipes, whistle, bouzouki, and guitar, and is a founding member of Two for the Gallows — a traditional Irish trio built on the same values that have driven him since that first hand-me-down guitar: thoroughness, depth, and an absolute commitment to getting it right.
From a quiet solo session in the corner of a pub to a full band show with some of Chicago's finest traditional players — Max brings authenticity, professionalism, and a deep love of the music to every gig.
Sometimes you just want a piper to sit in the corner and play tunes for a couple of hours — and there is nothing better than that. Max is available as a solo performer on uilleann pipes, Irish whistle, bouzouki, or guitar. Perfect for pubs, restaurant ambient music, private dinners, and background performance at events of any size.
